Working From Home: The New Normal

Working from home has become a common occurrence for many people over the past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While it has its benefits, such as the ability to work in a comfortable and familiar environment and the convenience of not having to commute, it also comes with its own set of challenges and drawbacks. One of the main things that people often miss when working from home is the social aspect of the office.

In the office, we have the opportunity to interact and connect with our colleagues on a daily basis. We can have impromptu meetings or conversations at the water cooler, collaborate on projects in person, and even grab lunch together. These interactions not only help to build strong working relationships, but they can also provide a sense of community and support. When working from home, it can be difficult to replicate these types of interactions and connections.

Another thing that is often missed when working from home is the structure and routine of the office. In an office setting, it is easier to maintain a regular schedule and be held accountable for our work. With the distractions of being at home, it can be harder to stay focused and on task. Additionally, the office provides a clear boundary between work and home life, which can be more difficult to maintain when working from home.

The office also offers access to resources and technology that may not be available at home. This includes things like printers, scanners, and other office equipment, as well as access to shared documents and files. While it is possible to access these things remotely, it can be more time-consuming and inconvenient than having them readily available in the office.

In addition to the practical aspects of the office, there are also the intangible benefits that are often missed when working from home. The office can provide a sense of purpose and belonging, as well as opportunities for professional development and growth. It can be easier to feel isolated and disconnected when working from home, which can have a negative impact on morale and overall job satisfaction.

While working from home has its benefits, it is important to recognize and address the things that are missed about the office. This can include finding ways to stay connected with colleagues, maintaining a regular schedule and structure, and finding ways to access necessary resources and technology. By acknowledging and addressing these challenges, it is possible to make the transition to working from home a successful and fulfilling experience.
